Barry Rhodes Pottery, Marshall, NC
My work is mid-range stoneware, fired to cone 6 and slowly cooled to enhance the glaze surfaces. I throw, hand-build and extrude my shapes. Designs are layers of slips and underglazes applied by brush, bottle, ceramic pencil or printed from original designs created on my iPad and made into stamps.
I take a graphic approach to pottery while still paying homage to the depth of surface found on hi-fired stoneware. Though I mostly hand built flower vases and bowls, I do occasionally return to my throwing roots. Almost 3 years ago I moved my studio from Atlanta, GA to rural Western North Carolina and now I find my work more and more influenced by the area. My current work is taking a decidedly “back to nature” turn since moving here. My surfaces though simpler now than in the past, remain a patchwork of lines and patterns, superimposed on more organic forms. The torn edges and silhouettes of the newest work seem to emanate from the rugged landscape we now live in and my color palate has now taken on the grays, blues and greens of distant mountain vistas. The work continues to evolve organically from living in this wonderful area.
