Sedberry Pottery, Burnsville NC
I employ both wheel throwing and hand building techniques to create functional ceramics. I finish this work in a wood burning kiln.
Currently I am investigating the possibilities between deliberate surface decoration and the limitless variables derived from wood firing. I want my imagery to evoke themes of movement and energy, an aesthetic that I rely of the firing process to deliver. I relish this collaborative approach, as it forces me to give up a fraction of control - allowing chance and serendipity to play a small role. The imagery I choose to decorate my pots derives entirely from my immediate surroundings, including the natural color hues I see outside my studio window.
The slip I use to decorate my pots is made from a proto-porcelain we find just miles from my studio, as is the wood we burn as fuel in our kiln.
Most recently I have begun the exploration of double walled functional vessels. These pieces are all about process and how those decisions are translated in the finished work: Rims are cut quickly and deliberately, glazes are poured, and the work is finished in a wood kiln. The result is work that has a certain deftness; combined with the volume derived from the double wall hollow forms, the work is engaging both to the eye and hands.
