Nancy Kubale

Rutherfordton, NC

Built with slab, coil & sculpting techniques in red earthenware. I coat with white porcelain terra sigillata(creating a blush), burnish to a satin finish & bisque. Layering with oxides, underglaze, glaze, stains, underglaze pencils & powders, litho & serigraph printing on slip, Firing 3 to 5 times.

Behind the familiarity of the BODY, my work contemplates our shared existence and individual experience. It is my pursuit of TRUTH (trying to figure out what & how things really are). They are contemplative & sometimes ordinary statements, ubiquitous thoughts & universal principles. I am intrigued by who we are & how we live & the ideologies we embrace. My imagery is influenced by Greek & Roman sculpture, Catholic statuary, Urban, Southern & indigenous Folk Art. Some of the larger pieces utilize "stages & backdrops" - to create an environment or context. Graffiti tagging & text are added elements that provide essence : the "I AM" - of things that distinguish & define a life
